Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen

Before I invite His Excellency Wu Bangguo to deliver his lecture, allow me to give a brief introduction of our distinguished Speaker by highlighting the major appointments of his most illustrious career.

His Excellency Wu Bangguo was born in 1941 in Feidong County, Anhui Province. He graduated as an engineer from Tsinghua University in 1967. He began his professional career in the same year with Shanghai No. 3 Electronic Tube Factory and rose through the ranks to become the Deputy Manager for Shanghai Electron Tube Company in 1979.

In 1983, he became a Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Municipal and Secretary of the CPC Municipal Committee in Charge of Science and Technology. His political career continued to brighten with his appointment as a Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in 1992. In 1994, while still a Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, he was also made a Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee. In 1995, he was appointed as Vice-Premier of the State Council before becoming the Secretary for the Work Committee of Large Enterprises of CPC Central Committee in 1998. Distinguished Guests
Ladies and Gentlemen

I thank you very much, Your Excellency for your insightful lecture. Your presentation has given us a more informed and balanced understanding of how China perceives this region, including the current challenges. The emergence of China as a global player is both central and strategic for our growth in Asia. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance for neighbouring countries in the region to deepen their friendship to attain common prosperity.

Malaysia, on its part, greatly values her relations with China. A steady growth in these relations in the past three decades has served both countries well. It is pertinent therefore that the culture of engagement be continuously nurtured to maximise our achievements for our mutual benefit.

I take this opportunity to once again thank His Excellency Wu Bangguo for addressing us today.

To the distinguished audience, please accept my sincere appreciation for being here to share this time with us.

Thank you.
